“Right…” Hatman said, looking up from the resume. “Tiffy, is it?”

“That’s Tiffany, sir…” the petite girl with the raven-black hair replied. “If you don’t mind.”

“Okay, sorry about that” he nodded to her. “Why don’t you tell me a little about yourself… You’re a friend of Visionary and Fleabot’s, aren’t you?”

“Er, yes sir… You could say that.”

He waited for her to continue. “Anything more...?”

She blushed. “I… don’t know. What kind of a future can a robotic flea and a… Oh! You mean more about me. Yes, of course. I…” She paused and cocked her head to one side to consider things. “Er… Actually, no sir. Not much else to tell.”

Jay studied the strange girl in awkward silence for a moment while she just waited patiently. “Okay then. Um… Your resume says “ample” under previous experience. You’ve done this kind of work before?”

“Yes sir… You could say that.”

“You didn’t leave a name or number for your previous employer… Is there anyway we could reach him?”

“I do hope so, sir… I’d very much like to get back to him.”

“Er… okay. So you see this as a kind of temp job?”

“Yes sir.”

He waved dismissively. “You don’t really have to call me “Sir”. I don’t really use the knightly title.”

“You were knighted, sir?” she asked. She reflected on that. “Oh… right. So you were. Congratulations.”

“Yes… um… thank you” Jay responded hesitantly. He went to make a note in her file, but his pen ran out of ink. “Whoops… Hold on one minute while I find out where Mumphrey kept the spare…”

“Middle left-hand desk drawer, in the back, under the box of paperclips” she noted.

He found the ink refills right where she had predicted. “You haven’t been snooping around the office here, have you?” he asked.

“Indeed not, sir!” she responded, ruffled, crossing her arms in front of her. “You’ll want to take this call.”

“What call?” he asked.

Just then the phone on the desk rang.

“It’s a representative of Ms. Masamune” She got up and straightened her skirt. “I’ll let Mr. Foxglove know that you’ll be busy for a while, and he should delay the next round of interviews for a bit. Thank you for your time, sir…”

Jay caught himself before he asked her to do exactly what she offered while she was offering it. “Um… yes, thanks” he managed instead, picking up the phone as he watched the young woman depart. “At least I’d be the first to know if we have choppers incoming…” he noted silently.

“Indeed sir” she replied as she closed the door behind her. “And I’m sure you’ll come through things better than Henry Blake...”
